It's been a while since I wrote my last review, but there's been so much going on lately that I just didn't get the chance to take a closer look at games. I could probably spend a lot more time on Asterigos as well, but there always comes a point when it's time to introduce the game. Especially since it was already released on October 11th. The fact that I'm about a month behind isn't problematic, because that brings the game back in mind.

Story

In Asterigos we play as Hilda. The brave warrior of the Northwind Legion is searching for her father, who disappeared in a mystical city called Aphes. Since there was no news of him, the daughter went to solve the mystery. But even before she enters the city, she senses that something is not right. Now Hilda will not only discover the fate of her father, but she will also learn about the rise and fall of the great city of Aphes.

Gameplay

In the world of Asterigos, one thing awaits us: many monsters and enemies that we have to fight. How we approach our task is up to us, since Hilda, as a member of the Northwind Legion, has been trained in the mastery of many weapons. Our arsenal consists of sword and shield, double daggers, spear, two-handed hammer, magic staff, as well as magic bracelets for trapping. You can also try out what suits you better first, because we don't get any new weapons, we simply upgrade the weapons we already have. But to do that, we need to find enough raw materials. Then the blacksmith, who is a fox by the way, can improve our weapons. But that's not a problem, because on our quests in the city we collect quite a lot.

But of course we don't get anything for free, because henchmen and monsters are already waiting for us. At one point we are attacked by members of a street gang, and a little deeper in the city by minotaurs, werewolves and harpies. But that's only a part of what's awaiting us. The enemies, as well as the environment, are heavily influenced by Roman and Greek mythology. The bosses that exist in the sections also show this well. The gameplay is similar to Darksouls with its strong monsters and even stronger bosses, but it doesn't come close to the difficulty level, and also not to the frustration factor. That's why I would call it a good entry-level in Soulslike games.

Besides the fights, the equipment is of course very important. As mentioned, there are the six weapons. In addition, there are four trinkets and several utility items, four of which we can place on the control pad, with one or two slots already taken by potions. Healing potions are fortunately often found and don't cost much to purchase in an emergency. Throwing weapons are also a nice little extra, but their damage is so low that they don't really have any impact. What is important, however, is that we always upgrade our weapons and there we should decide on two favorites, because it is not quite cheap to improve the weapons.

What we also have to improve again and again are our stats and our abilities, because with increasing level we are allowed to award a lot of points. First of all, there are the attributes Precision, used to increase our weapon damage, Constitution increases the number of hit points we have, and Arcane affects the damage and recharge time of our special skills. Furthermore, we have talent points, which are divided into our six weapon groups on a star disk. Also a reason to specialize. Skills and bonus talents are then unlocked depending on how we spent our skillpoints.

Something else to mention is that there are many quests waiting for Hilda besides the main story. Alone the number of quests we need to make progress in the story seems to grow steadily. But if you then continue to explore the city, you'll unlock additional side quests that you can complete as well. For example, I first defeated a monster at the door and then knocked on it to find out how the residents were doing. The resident then informed me that she shares stardust with her cousin, and if I couldn't bring it to her. Since these tasks are unmarked, it is worth keeping your eyes open.

Graphics and Sound

Graphically, Asterigos reminds me a lot of Immortal's Fenyx Rising, probably because the setting is very similar. Both have a strong cartoon style. It doesn't even look comic-like anymore, but more like plastic drawings. This looks very impressive in many places and and saves performance, even though the Unreal Engine gives the game the right boost.

Sound and music leave nothing to be desired. While we shred monsters through the streets, the background music quietly plays and the sound effects bang around our ears. At one point the instrumental changes to singing, and it turns out that the main character also hears this and comments accordingly. The story behind this is that a harpy sings, and it's part of the quest. An interesting combination of mixing music and gameplay.

Conclusion

Asterigos may not be a really hard Soulslike game, but it certainly belongs in the genre, which makes it much easier to get into. Additionally, you'll be given a story and quests to keep the whole thing going as well. This is, I think, the right way to go if you want to introduce gamers to the genre. However, it would probably be too easy for fans of the Darksouls series. That doesn't mean it's not for them, as the story and beautiful graphics will also find their fans. For my part, I must confess that I had a lot of fun with Asterigos and still do, even if the increased deaths at some points also send me into a rage.
